Connecting Rod Structure Composition

The connecting rod body consists of three parts, the part connected with the piston pin is called the connecting rod head, the part connected with the crankshaft is called the connecting rod head, and the rod part connected with the small head and the big head is called the connecting rod body.

In order to reduce the wear and tear between the pin and the connecting rod, the thin-wall bronze bushing is pressed into the small head hole. Drilling or milling grooves are drilled on small heads and bushings to allow splashed oil to enter the mating surface of lubricating bushings and piston pins.

Connecting rod body is a long member, and it has a large force in work. In order to prevent its bending deformation, the rod body must have sufficient rigidity. For this reason, the connecting rod body of automotive engine mostly adopts the I-section, which can minimize the mass when the stiffness and strength are sufficient. The H-section is used in the high-strength engine. Some engines use connecting rod small-end jet oil to cool pistons, and drill through holes in the longitudinal direction of the rod body. In order to avoid stress concentration, large arc smooth transition is adopted at the joints of connecting rod body with small head and large head.

In order to reduce the vibration of the engine, the quality difference of each cylinder connecting rod must be limited to a minimum. When assembling an engine in a factory, the connecting rod is generally grouped according to the mass of the big and small end of the connecting rod in gram, and the same group of connecting rods is selected for the same engine.

On the V-type engine, the corresponding cylinders in the left and right rows share a crank pin. The connecting rods have three types: parallel connecting rod, fork connecting rod and main and auxiliary connecting rod.
